Computing

At Pickhurst Infant Academy, we recognise that technology is everywhere, and will play a pivotal role in the lives of our children.

As an infant school it is therefore essential that we educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely and provide them with a strong foundation in the areas of Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. To facilitate this, all children are provided with a rich, engaging and creative Computing curriculum which teaches children the knowledge and skills that they need in KS1, whilst providing opportunities for the children to apply these skills creatively. In the Early Years children will explore and be taught to use technology across the curriculum in a purposeful way which will impact positively on their learning and development.

Online safety is taught across the school throughout the year and our aim is to ensure that this is consistently embedded so that the children feel confident with the understanding of knowing how to keep themselves safe online in different scenarios. Though the children at our school are too young to be using social media, we understand the role that this form of communication will no doubt play in their future lives. We understand that the best prevention for many of the issues seen with social media today is education, and as a school we therefore model the positive use of social media for the children to see. We use our media platforms to share and celebrate achievements, whilst also sending positive and respectful messages. We want our pupils to understand that there is always a choice when using technology, and that the values of respect and friendship extend to the online world just as much as they do to the offline world. With an exploration of online bullying, and the harm that it can cause, we hope that children leave Year 2 with an understanding for the need to be kind online. We instil the values necessary to operate responsibly and respectfully online, ready for when the children begin to explore these realms themselves in later life.
